Gas Mileage 2 low, what can I do??

I just bought a 92 pontiac Trans Am. People who have a similar car (5.0, V8) wanna know about the gas mileage for the car. My car gives me only 12 miles per gallon. Is this normal?? or do i have problems, please reply.

I dont know why my car's giving me only 12 miles, I think I am gonna have a tune up job done to my car. If anybody knows what exactly can be done to increase the gas mileage, please reply. Also can anyone tell me, what grade of gas should I put, I currently use 93 octane. Also anyone know how much gallons exactly can a factory stock TPI 5.0 V8 Trans am hold.

In the city I would say that is a little off. I bet mines around 15 or so. It was getting like 12 to the gallon before I put it into the shop. I also had that fuel smell going on when I would start it.

I'd say you have some sort of issue if you can't get 15 to the gallon.

You're definitely off. My 350 gets about 15/21.

My 305 tbi runs 19/21 all around driving and 26/28 on the freeway at 75mph. The 2.73 help that a lot. but then mines not a T/A.

if this is just recent, might not worry too much. i have a new engine since dec, (5.0 TPI) and was getting 16-18 around town, but since this extreme cold up in the northeast, it's been 14-15. i've had 3 5.0 TPI cars, two t-top and now a conv, and the t-tops got around 17-19/22-24, and this one is about 16-18/21-24.

but if you're constantly in traffic commuting, or make lots of really short trips in the winter, that can hurt your mileage a lot. if you're in a state (like PA) with oxygenated winter gas, that takes off about 1mpg from my experience

Mine used to get about 12 combined driving, but it may have to do with all the junk I've put on it. I will say that after I put the MSD in it bumped up to about 18 combined driving. Now the disclaimer is this: combined driving means rush hour traffic most of my 'highway miles' so take it as you will.

On a highway trip, my camaro will get about 15mpg if I am real nice to it. But since it is winter and all I am doing is driving to work and back I am getting about 10 or less. But you have to think, if you are warming your car up that is 10 minutes or so you are burnin fuel and the mileage isn't movin. You gotta account for that.

These numbers are pretty sad. When I first got my car it was getting 12 mpg. I live in the country where I'm almost always going 55. After changing a bunch of crap I was able to get it up to 15. Since then I've changed the IC in the prom and have yet to get another reading (car's stored for the winter).

I say these numbers are sad because my wife's 00 TA gets ~25 mpg with mostly country driving.

First thing to do is to check for stored trouble codes. You can read up on how to do it at the FAQ from the main page, at the bottom. If you're getting any codes, the problem that's causing them could potentially affect your gas mileage. The tune up is a good idea. Remember to change all of your filters/fluids, old ones can also hurt your gas mileage.

One more thing: check to see if the original or previous owner put an aftermarket chip in. Some of these can really reduce your milage.

change your O2 sensor. i wasn't thinking last time when i answered, but the conv was getting like 11-12 around town, and after the O2 sensor, it was 16, then plugs/wires got it to around 18.

(btw, i had no O2 sensor code, but it still needed to go - poor emissions is a good indicator too, i almost failed HC/CO)

Found the solution

Thanks for all of your replies, actually I changed my spark plugs and wires and air filter and the most important thing that was wrong with the car was i was leaking water from the intake manifold gasket. Now I am getting about 15/17 to the gallon

I usually less than 20 mpg in normal mixed driving and 25 to 26 mpg highway on my 87 Trans Am with TPI 305 and five speed. I usually only check highway gas mileage since it feels good to see it come out good. Finding city mileage wouldn't feel so hot.
