life sucks then ya die
well i took my ta to the exhaust shop to get it done and the oil changed... when he drained the oil, big time liquids...... i couldn't tell if it was water or a ****load of gas from where it had been running rich....
well we got to looking and i found a drip of coolant on the starter... i looked to find the leak and sure enough right on the edge where the head gasket is there was a milky whte substance where it had been mixing with the oil.......
dang this sucks the big one........ the driver side from what i can tell is fine and the headers are sealed to even with cheap rebuild gaskets that came with the kit.... go figure
.....
the head gaskets i bought are gm composites that i know where installed correctly......
i'm wanting to use some of the rol's that have permatex made in for around the cooling ports and stuff.. theyr'e afr 190's and i don't want to brill them.... does anyone use a particular gasket here that they have had alot of luck with?
does anyone know about these rol's? where can i get them?
would felpro 1003's be any good?
thanks fellas

I don't know how good the gm gaskets are, but I'd assume they're better than felpro, which is what I've used and not had any problems with. There has to be a reason your head gasket blew, so find it and fix it or it will probably happen again.

Doesnt AFR Recommend to ONLY USE Felpro gaskets?
I think its like felpro 1206 or 1205 for head gaskets. they have the metal O-ring and all that good stuff. its what i used on my AFR's.
check their website, the specs are there. airflowresearch.com

You don't have to use fel-pro's. I am using a .028 thick gasket from gm now, and have used the victor reinz gasket from napa in the past also.
I think there maybe some problems with the assembly.

ahhhh
i built the motor from the ground up.... the gaskets were from gm parformance parts and are the composite ones that have the 41/8 bore size.........
10159455 Composition Head Gasket
This composition head gasket with stainless steel jacket is used on Chevrolet V8 302 - 400 CID engines with bore diameters from 4" to 4 1/8". The gasket has a compressed thickness of .039".
thats directly from their site......
i always thought compistsion is a good hardcore gasket that will last a while but obviously somthings a miss here......
this would explain why some of my lifter keep bleeding off and ****, i think it's because the air bubbles from the water or somthing.....
i was thinking of the felpro 1003's that afr reccomends..... with all intakes felpro also.... damn and the intake was sealed so good too.......
i just can't figure out what caused it, i know the compression isn't too much, it's 10.3:1 with 93 chevron octane and a comp cam with 230*in and 236* exhaust on a 112*lsa... it lopes but it still runs pretty good....... gm said they will gladly replace the gaskets but they wont do the labor because they didn't install it..... and i know they were installed properly, becuse compisition requries that you don't use anything on them but to just put them on and bolt the head down..... the surface was good and clean, so i can't figure it out.... and it dosen't overheat 1 bit... stays right at 160* all the time.......... once it warms to 160 that is.... i don't think detonation is a culprit but i'm not ruling it out as of yet until disesembly....
any ideas on what caused it? would retorqing the bolts seal it ya think? i always thought if ya had a leaky seal it requires replacing.... i don't think it's leaking into the combustion chamber just letting the oil mix with the collant near 1 of the passages......
i just don't know....

oohhh
yeah be gobbed the rtv on the bolts....... i know they sealed up... we tored the bolts in three steps... i think i divided 68 into three to come to the specified torque, and yes the bolts were torked in the correct sequence.......
the gaskets weren't marked so i put them so the part no was up...... they had a arrow on them so i'm pretty sure that that meant up, but besides that there were no other markings.. weird huh, especially for gm........ i'll be glad to take pics of everything for everyone to see once dissesembly starts.....
this is just so messed up it isn't funny........ damn i thought i was done wrenching on it for at least 500 miles....

I used ROL gaskets on my motor, no problems yet. Everything is tight and nothing leaks.
I'm not sure but I beleive my ROL gasket set, is just a mixed set of gaskets from Fel-Pro and Mr.Gasket co.

It's not coming from the intake is it? What intake are you using? Do you have splayed main caps? I used rtv on the bolts that were splayed. They go a little into the water jackets.

Other than that, check everything with straight edges, put it back together, and cross your fingers. Maybe even pray you didn't get a poorly cast head with some porosity issues.
Also, your torque step sequence was kinda wrong too. You don't necessarily do the steps in even increments. I always did something more like 45-55-65
And check the oil more frequently too. I mean, it seems like you didn't check the oil before you drove it over to the shop, so you at least drove a little bit with coolant in your oil. I'd be a little more cautious with a new engine than that until you're sure it's doing OK.

forgive me but i'm fubared on jack daneils right now.. lol.....
i figured why not considering the luck iv'e had huh.. i wish i bought at 5.0 mustang now lol
.... seriously, i don't think it's the heads, if it is i'll be sending them back to afr and demanding new ones....
i just think they didn't seal with those gakets........
i'll put the fel pro 1003's in and if they don't seal then i know the block is fubar and i'll get a short block zz4 from gm that i know is right....
it's shoing a badseal from the coolant oil mix at the heaed block seal where i saw it..... if the felpro's don't fix it then i'll just go ahead and get the zz4 short block.......
thanks ed for taking the time to help, i know it seems that i am a **** up but i know it was bulit right and i know that it's just the seal, and not the heads..... just let me have some time and i'll prove it.......
well see you guys later and i hope i don't get banned for being so fubared lol lol lol lol llo lolool lol
