Can't get distributor in!!!!!!!!

After finally getting all of my parts, I started to put everything back together. All was fine until I got to the distributor. I marked the rotor in reference to the body and the location of the whole distributor. But, I didn't mark the location of the rotor after it was done turning during removal. I dropped the distributor while I was lifting it up and the rotor moved so I couldn't mark the final spot. So you guessed it, it's not going back in. I spent around 5 hours fiddling with it trying every position possible, to no avail. Does anyone have any tricks they know of to help in this situation, without turning engine over to #1 cylinder and so on. I'm at my wits end and the real frustrating part is I can't take it anywhere to fix it. My car has been down since October and I can't wait to see the results of all the money spent. Can anyone please help, I would be in your debt for life.:hail:

Stick a long screw driver down the distributor hole and move the oil pump gear alittle so the distributor will drop in.

Chevy High Performance had a rookie tech session about distributor swaps, they mentioned that method as well as the "mark this, mark that" option. My dad said that the turn the motor over method is the way he used to do it!

You don't need to move the gear much, just a tiny little touch will do it. Its so close, but still so far away!

Well, I turned the oil pump a little and it went in. The marks seem off just a hair though. The rotor lines up with the body, but where I marked the body it seems off 1/4". It seems it it was 1 tooth off there would be more of a noticeable difference in the mark. I guess I'll just put it back together and pray it's right. Thanks for all the help, especially ME Leigh.
