Does your speedometer work? Because they work off the same gear.

Like ME Leigh said, both the speedo and odometer run off the speedo cable. If neither work, check that the cable is intact and connected at both the cluster and the trans. If everything is OK, check the gears inside the tailhousing. If the speedo DOES work, the problem is internal to the speedo gauge - in which case you will need a new one.

The speedometer does work, but it's not completely accurate. So does that mean the problem is in the guage itself? Thanks again for the help guys i'm trying to fix this car up to sell it.

Yup. Needs a gauge cluster.

Or you could replace JUST the speedo.

How do you know the speedo is off? That might not be the problem. If the rear gears or transmission has been changed, that could make it inaccurate.

The speedometer works, it's just a little slow. The odometer doesn't work at all.
