89 TA specs question

I'm thinking about buying a 89 TA with a 305 TPI, 5 speed.. I looked at the charts in the tech data and it has two 89 TA's with the 305 TPI and 5 speed.. each has a different gear ratio, one with a 3.08 10 bolt, and one with a 3.45 borg warner 9 bolt.. my question is, was that all there was in the 5 speed options? just two rear ends? Since I looked at the chart, it's made me want to figure out what gear ratio it has, and I know it has drum brakes, so I'm assuming it's a 10 bolt 3.08. This also brings me to another question, does that mean it really has 220hp as opposed to the newer 305 TPI's that had 210 or 205hp? if so, why the difference in hp? I know the 230hp option was the dual cat setup.. but what's the difference in the other?

Axle/Gears: 7.5 with 3.42 gears
5 speed cars got a bigger cam, that might account for the differing numbers.

quickest way for you to tell is this.... does your car have the rpo sticker in the console? if so, look for any codes starting with the letter g. example GU4 iirc indicates a 3.08 axle.

well, it's 4 hours away from here... I'll try and ask the guy.. I was actually told that the charts aren't quite complete, so there may have been ratios not listed in there... I'll figure it out someday. hehe

91,

Have the seller look under the rear of the car. There are two clues to identifying the Borg axle - there should be nine bolts holding on the rear cover, and there should be a rubber plug in the rear cover (for checking/filling oil). If it is a Borg axle, you could have 2.77, 3.27, or 3.45 gearing. That information is on a tag mounted to the front of the right axle tube, and in the RPO code listing tag in the vehicle console or rear storage compartment. Most manuals didn't get the 2.77 gears, but anything is possible, I guess.

Yes, the specification charts in the Tech Data section are incomplete.
