what would be a good vehicle to look at for a manual stearing gearbox to replace the power unit I have on my 85 TA.

You might be disappointed with the lock-to-lock turns on any manual box, but you might find the tightest ones on an older S-truck.

thanks, I am trying to shed a few pounds on my drag only car and heard the manual box was lighter, I thought about just pulling the ps pump and leaving the box but I don't know if that would work.

This would work, just make sure you loop the box's in & out power steering lines together so that fluid can move. I think a manual box would be less effort at the wheel and feel a lot better overall. And tidier under the hood...

Removing the ps pump will work but it puts more strain on all the steering componets up top of the box. I was worried about the tilt steering column getting messed up on my car, because of the extra effort needed to steer. hope that makes sense to you.
