serpentine should have a belt tensioner. i bought a bad alt one time that sounded like that for about a week, then it went out

I'm guessing your car has a serpentine belt on the alternator and v-belts elsewhere? Check and see how much the belt deflects when you push your finger down on it, it should be about half an inch. Is the alternator a rebuild?

The tensioner has a coiled spring with a fairly constant spring rate to maintain a relatively steady pressure on the belt. Unless the spring has been rewound, it's nearly impossible to get a belt too tight. Is the belt new as well?

when u loosen the tensioner with a 1/2 inch ratchet (what i use), its spring loaded and should just go back to were it was without any adjusments necessary. you may have gotten a bad alternator man, i dunno.

Did I misunderstand "tighten it on? You meant the alternator, not the belt? heh. These guys are right then. It should be fine. Anything you hear is probably the alternator. I'd remove it and take it back and tell the store that it's making noise.

The noise went away on its own, it was just that way last night for like an hour I guess.
