Steering wheel removal?

I sold a steering column and I need to ship it, but Im having a hell of a time finding a box big enought to pack the column with the wheel attached. It would be no problem if the steering wheel was off.

How do you take the wheel off the column? How exactly is it attached? I have the tool to remove a crank balancer, can i use that?

Yes in fact you can, you just need to find the right size bolts to go into the wheel. They might be 5/16" std thread IIRC.

Remind your buyer to torque the steering wheel nut to 35 ft/lb. There are already plenty of loose nuts behind the steering wheels of many cars on the road. More wouldn't be a good thing.

Yeah; when I pulled my wheel off this Friday, I was surprised at how easy it popped off the steering shaft. I expected at least a struggle! I was surprised that there was no locator spline to put the steering wheel back in "straight up".

Before you pull the wheel off, you might want to make a mark with whiteout that draws a line across the center of the steering shaft, and goes onto the steering wheel around the shaft. That way the buyer can get the wheel straight without much trouble.

Thanks for the help guys. I got got the wheel off earlier today using the balancer puller. I was surprised at how easy it was too. Once the puller was actually "pulling", it only took maybe 1 full rotation and it popped off in my hands.

theres a small dot on the shaft so you can match the wheel straight up... still hard to put on straight tho.. bad design

Are you guys sure? I thought the wheel and shaft were splined such that it would only go on one way.

More wouldn't be a good thing
I know that one's right.
