What would a bad lifter sound like?

I have some horrific sound coming from my engine. When its under partial load its really really loud, but when under full load I can only hear it a little due to engine and exhaust noise. So my question is, what would a bad lifter sound like. Either one that is starting to go or one that is completely shot. What kind of sounds would it make? This is really starting to **** me off so if anybody has some insight on this that would be great.

The smog pump can make a helluva racket if it's going bad. I had one go bad on my Cadillac. Really loud at idle, but not as bad on the highway. Matt

We have a winner. This totally sounds like my eninge. I guess the only sure way to tell is by pulling the intake manifold and looking though. Maybe in the next couple weeks I'll give it a shot.
