leaking fuel tank

i have a 92rs all orig w/ 180k miles 305 tbi, it started leaking gas around the fuel filler neck and tank joint.

the dealer price for a new one about $450.

does anyone know of aftermarket tanks for less and of equal quality or better?

thanks

There is an emissions/safety related recall on those tanks, that year too. GM must replace it at no charge.

weld it, or resolder it if you're worried about fire either spnd 50 bucks and have it cleaned at a radiator shop or run car exhaust into it.

RBob hit it on the nose. Do not pay to replace it yourself. Take it to the dealer and tell them about the recall. If they don't cooperate, call the NHTSB. I did and then called Pontiac's headquarters. I told them the dealer wouldn't do anything about my leaking gas tank and that I'm talking to the Highway Safety Board. They asked what dealer and then put me on hold for about five minutes. When they came back online they told me to call the dealer and make an appointment to have my tank changed for free. Its covered under a recall and they have to take care of it because its a safety issue. Do some research and find the recall number. Don't back down on this one. They are in the wrong.

Great information. That's the beauty of these boards. We may have just saved JBC a chunk of change and frustration.

Personally, with 180K on the car, I'd have a hard time letting the dealer change the tank without installing a new AC fuel pump while it was out. If you hand them a new pump, there should be no difference in cost since the old one would have to be disconnected at the line set, unplugged, and removed anyway. Reassembling with a new pump that you provided (AC/Delco ONLY!) had better not cost any more labor, since the R&R procedure in the manuals requires removal of the pump. They'd probably try to sell you a new tank flange 'O' ring anyway (which would be a good idea), and the one that comes with the new pump would cover that expense. You should be able to get a new AC pump kit for around $103.80. That was the price about two months ago. Make sure you specify that you DO NOT want a pulsation damper installed.

A pulsation damper is a device mounted to the fuel pump to reduce pump output pulsations. there are two type. One has a diaphragm backed by a steel spring/disc, and the other is basically a hose with a thin section to allow pressure spike to "inflate" it. Either type can fail and leak internall (back to the tank) reducing the pump output pressure. Many vehicles operate just fine without one (including mine) and came from the factory without a damper.

One thin I did neglect to mention is that with the new pump you should get a new fuel pickup screen (about $5) and a new fuel filter.
