What does this hose that I broke do? (pic. inside)

See picture...

I'm not even completely positive that I actually broke it. The plastic "straw" that comes from the wiring harness came out of the little L-shaped boot. In other words, I can't tell that it actually broke-off because I can stuff it back into the boot. Plus, it looks like a clean break if it was a break at all.

I just want to know:

1. What does it do?
2. Is it okay for me to just push it back into the boot, or will that cause me a vacuum leak?

There is a possiblity that I might have a vacuum leak, and I want to make sure if this might cause it or not.

Thanks

The vacuum line (straw) that runs to under the dash is for the heater/AC controls.
Yes it would give you a small vacuum leak and your heater control wouldn't work right. Try going from heat to defrost and see what happens.

Thanks for the replies.

Now, I'm just wondering if its acutally broken or not. Is the plastic tube supposed to be able to come out of that L-shaped rubber boot, or was it supposed to be permanently attached to the boot?

I just pressed it back into the boot, and it seems to stay.

Vacuum hose for heater/AC controls + cruise control (if equiped).

You only need replace the original connection and try with the engine running (if all the heat/AC flow for only one "vent grille" in the dash, try again with the connection).
