I'll be getting a nice littel chunk of change soon, and wanted some input for my 91 Z28 project. Its my daily driver, so nothing crazy- i just want inputs for engine work/drivetrain etc.. Lets hear the ideas.....
T-56 swap, suspension (Hotchkis has a nice setup they've put together, supposedly the components are matched to improve performance....keep in mind it lowers the car 1"), wheels, Moser rear end, interior mod/resto, paint/body......the last two depend on the condition your car's in, of course

what would i do? paint job (not cheap but not outrageously expensive either), suspension work, interior work, maybe rims depending on how much money i got left. I definitely wouldn't spend the whole 7 grand.

Paint job
Baer Brakes
All new suspension
New carpet and seats.
That's what I would do anyways.
For you, I'd say get a crate engine, higher stall TC, some new rear gears, and SFCs.

LS1 w/T56 trans = $4000
then you can get a spohn torque arm, a good clutch and flywheel, a driveshaft, etc. Or hell...you could even just put the LS1 w/t56 then put cam, heads, intake...which would pretty be an LS6 O_o

I'd finish up my motor, get some Baer Brakes, suspension enhancements, paint, targa top conversion, new spoiler, and some tires.

ahhh
alot of people above have said a few things i agree with....
i built a lumpy 450hp 383 for the ta..... but now i wish i hadn't...
i would build the most stout 355 bottom end i could... get some afrs or equvilent and a good intake and superchage it..........
when it comes to cam selection, i would go with the most powerful, with idle quality like a factory cam would have.......
that way you would have a car that still idled and runs smoothly like stock but will move like a bat out of hell!!!!
then try to invest the ret into things i wouls need to help the car live with what i have done like a good 9" housing and tranny.....
good luck and i hope it works the way ya want!!

zz4 crate with hot cam, t56 swap, and some suspension upgrades or fresh paint, or you could go ramjet 350

well, actually, i might not spend the whole 7k, unless you wanted a supercharger. But, to do a s/c, you'd need a motor tranny and rear at the least, and you'd need more than 7k to do it half right. There are many hiden costs. So, anyway, you'd be better of going w/ a nice motor and tranny, and it would be great for the street. I would go w/a zz4 or something like that, t-56, and the intake would depend on your states emmsions. If there arent any, you could go w/ a carb. Save you money, if you don't drive alot of miles. The stealthram is nice, but you'd be spending alll of you money w/ the motor and trans then. I'd try to just spend about 6k and get the motor carb and tranny. or 7 for the stealth. You won't be able to afford a supercharger, unless you put it on the stock motor, which isn't a good idea. it'll break, and cost you well over 10k total when you're done,...besides it's a 305. you really need about 15k for a nice blower setup (motor, blower, cage, suspension, fule injjection, computer, tranny, rear, etc,...)/. Also the 410hp s350 he mentioned above, sounds nice,..edelbrock..., probably comes w/ a carb too!

personally i would build a fully forged 355... compression around 9:1... 9 inch rear... turbo 350 tranny... THEN THROW THE BIGGEST TURBO I COULD FIND ON IT!!!!!!! oh yeah and some 3.73s... but that is just me!!!!
Fully forged rotating assembly, displacement of your choice and some AFR 195's.
Suspension upgrade, Baer brakes and a rebuild of the steering components.
Then sort out any "issues" or other problems with the car. A new tranny and rear end before putting a supercharger near the car wouldn't hurt either.

My ideas:
Build a 355 Bottom end= about $2,000
If you want to go carburated:
Trickflow heads= $1,000
High rise intake = $ 200
Good carb ( Demon/Holley) = $400
Comp Xtreme Energy cam = $150
Depending on the cam you pick for that setup you can have anywhere from 350- 500 hp. Maybe more. The motor cost will be about $4,000, not to bad.
Fuel Injected:
Same bottom end= $2,000
Worked Vortec heads= $750
SPDC TPI Vortec intake= $ 325
High flow runners= $300
Throttle Body= $300
Extreme Energy Comp Cam = $150
Computer chip/tuning= $250-$400
Injectors= $350-$500
Ok You could retain the stock computer and wiring and all that but it'll cost you to tune it. Were are talking at LEAST spending a good $900 bucks over the carbed setup. You'll get about 425-475 hp.
Transmission-
T56= $1,200-$1,600
Clutch= $600
If you go carbed: Motor and trans = About $6,000
TPI: motor and trans= about $7,000
Carbed leaves you some money to put the power to the ground, plus you'll make more power. If you have to pass emissions or if this is your daily driver, go TPI.

UPDATE
Hey people, AWESOME REPLIES! heres a little clarification to my project:
1. it has to be street driven car(its my ONLY car) so i want fuel injection
2. ultimately i want a procharger setup but the bottom end will need to be built to take it
Anybody have experience with trickflow heads? they're expensive, but are they worth the money? 1000-1200 is quite a bit of money, but if it'll give me a lot of power, its worth it.
What intake setup do ya'll recommend?
Keep the replies comin!!

Hmmm, if I had 7000 right now... Alright have a ford 9" so skipping that
Paracing tubular cross member, coil over, a-arms - 1000
Tubro 400, J&W Stall, Spohn Cross member and torque arm, Denny's Driveshaft - 2600 or so
Probably convert to carb/efi style intake and run aftermarket fuel injection and rebuild the 350 to run a little stronger. I think I could get some 10's on nitrous rebuilding the 350 correctly, and then start saving up for a blower engine that would be a little quicker.
Then probably start saving for the engine.

$7000.
Hate to rain on the parade...
Keep the car original, take the 7k and Invest.
BMS Bristol Myers because it is a bargain
GENE Genentech because it will double
JNJ Johnson and Johnson because it is safe haven
Turn your 7k into 14k then into 28k. You can buy a lot stuff for your car then..

which trick flow heads are you talking bout.... the flow #s on the 23* heads are pretty good... just slightly less than the AFR 190s... and for $250 less... but the Twsted Wedge G2's can have a tendency to be a pain... because of the "twisted" way the valves are setup... some pistons don't work with them because of valve clearance...
