Bought a car out of state, bringing in to TX.. HELP

Hey guys i just bought a 2002 SS off ebay from new york. The car arrived today through the shippers. It doesnt have any license plates, and the inspection sticker is from NY.

My question is this. Is there some grace period i can drive the car without getting tickets? I am working on getting the texas registration, and i am hoping to show the car to my insurance comapny this weekend...

I have to have insurance to get it inspected right? How the hell do i get insurance if i cant legally drive it up to the insurance company... etc

thanks,
Shane

All you need to do is call your insurance company and tell them you bought the car. They'll go ahead and insure it, but they'll charge you more until they can see it and make sure it has airbags, and that it's what you say it is. Then take it and get it tagged and registered. If you keep something with you like the title or bill of sale when you're driving around, most cops will understand that you just bought it. You'll need proof of insurance to get the car registered, and that can take a week or so unless you can have it faxed to you. You can still drive it like this. Even if you do get a ticket, you can get out of it in court when you show proof of insurance. Here in Oklahoma, you have 30 days to register your car after you buy it. When I bought my GTA, I called my insurance company before I drove it home and insured it. I was 100 miles from home and drove it home. The insurance company will tell you that this is okay to do. I'm sure Texas is the same way. I live in Oklahoma and we have way dumber laws than you guys! Matt

thanks. I wouldnt worry about it as much but i just know driving a car with NO LICENSE PLATES whatsoever is going to get me pulled over like crazy.. its a 200 mile drive to houston where i am going :-(

If i had temp plates or the car had NY plates i would feel a lot better about it

not sure how tejas works but here you'd need plates, you have the title right? get plates, or temp plates, or apply for plates, however it works there. you're a fool to drive it without plates, i'm sure every police officer, trooper, and depuity would pull you over and most likely it won't matter how good of a story you have. my insurance adds anything i buy automaticly for 30 days, not 100% sure how they do it, i never trusted it, i always call them soon as i buy something.

Oh, my bad. I missed the part where you said you didn't have plates! You don't want to drive without plates anywhere! If you can have your insurance company fax you something saying you have insurance, you can take that to the tag agency, or where ever you get tags at in Texas, and they should be able to give you a tag on the spot. Here in MO you can apply for temp tags. Those will get you around for 30 days without plates.

ede pegged it. Get a temporary plate. Here in Arizona the cost $1.00 and you can print them off the internet. It is good for three days. A cop would be much more forgiving about a temp plate having been expired a few days than no plate at all. It would show you followed the rules and made the effort and just ran out of time getting the paperwork done. Totally understandable.

Good luck.

Bill

I know some states inc CO let your title act as a temparary plate, if it is signed and dated. Granted you cant stick the title on the liscence plate and you will get pulled over, your safe as long as you are insured. BTW all your insurance company needs to insure you is the vin number. If you have the title in hand you can get the car insured sight unseen.
