Cruise Control, need to learn how it works and I have a prob

Okay well my cruise control has been not working since I bought the car and since my car is sitting in the garage and it's getting warm out I though I should play with it a bit.

First off my car is an 85 camaro with a 305 manual and is carbed. So my question is first off can anyone explain to me the basics on how this system works.

Second off my cruise control does nothing at all, I have vacuum going to it, is this most likely a switch problem or could it be a vacuum diaphram problem? I know very little about this system and any information would be greatly appreciated, especially since I'm not sure if it is different for a standard or an automatic.

you might have to do some trouble shooting, pull a vacuum on the system and see if it holds, poke some wires with a test light and see if you have power, check the brake lite switch adjustment

I have a 9 meg folder of jpg files that I scanned into my computer from the shop manual. E-mail me at adarius1@nycap.rr.com if you want the information. These are the entire chapter on the cruise control and the electrical diagrams and locations.
