Not to sound like a cheapskate, but the gear runs $30.00. I'm sure its a good idea to do it at the same time, but if I don't, and the gear looks like its not worn out, will it be ok, or will it wear out the cam gear?

What type of cam are you running? If it is a hydaulic flat tappet cam with your stock "86" distributor then no. If you are running a roller cam with your "86" distributor then yes.

you need a bronze gear with a billet roller cam, note the word billet, a steel gear will work just fine with any other cam, including a factory roller.

I am running a Clevite(sp?) cam with the same specs as a Crane Compucam2030. It will be installed in my 86, non-roller 305.
