my gas mileage improved :D

i did a calculation today and put in exactly 2 gallons of premium in the bird. reset my odometer and i got almost exactly 36 miles out of it which means my mpg now went up to 18 from about 15 since a long time ago. i'm sure the headers played a major role plus the fact i keep the car freshly tuned, got rid of a lot of stuff under the hood and for the most part i don't stomp on the gas at every light.

anyways just thought i'd post about it especially now when gas prices are so damn high, and will probably get even higher.

Headers will improve mileage but not usually that much. 2 gallons isn't enough to get a real accurate picture of fuel economy. Fill to the top, run it down about 100 miles and then fill it to the top again noting exactly how much gas you put in the second time. That'll give you a more accurate picture.

Use the same pump both times so you know it's shutting off at the same point.

It doesn't matter how you add fuel. Just keep a running total of the fuel added, and yout total mileage. If you put in three gallons 600 times, and get a total of 36,000 miles in all those fuel-ups, you're getting an average of 20 MPG. You don't necessarily need to fill it every time, just keep good records.

cool. thanx for the replies. looks like it's time to start writing the info down then and do it more frequently to get a more accurate reading. i haven't done it that way before but am eager to find out what my true MPG is. sure hope it's not too far off from the 18 that I got the other day.

I write mileage regardless. If I see a drastic change I know something's going on that needs to be checked.
Over the years of doing this I've found that as outside temps go up so do the mpg.
