Underhood insulation removal?

Hi, I'm trying to reduce as much weight as possible from my car and was wondering if there are any adverse side effects from removing the underhood insulation Will it peel my paint off the hood? Anyone know how much it weighs? Thanks...

Doesn't weigh much, and i've never seen it cause a problem with peeling paint either.

This isn't really TPI specific so i'm moving to general tech...

If you are that desperate for weight i would suggest removing wire looms, ash tray, and fine granules from your carpet . The hood insulation doesnt weigh anything compared to the performance times on your car. The only thing that i think that it really does is keeps heat under your hood for better warm up in the winter.

I remove it from any vehicle that I want to keep for a long time so I can see if there's rust getting started under the hood; the paint on my cars has never been affected by heat from doing this.

Sorry guy's, but the peice you are all talking about is a fire blanket. It is designed to drop on the motor if it cought fire.

Thats a theory that goes around as well, but even if that was the factory's purpose in putting it there, it still isn't going to drop down until all the plastic clips melt, which would be well after everything else worth salvaging under the hood was cooked anyway, and due to the shape of everything under the hood, and the insulations relative stiffness, it isn't going to do much of a job at smothering a fire anyway.

Ha, you are very right about that, it does not really seem like it would work, but that's what they call it at the truck factory.
