Do I need starter shims?

When I removed the starter I discovered no shims, The starter is fine, just took it out of the way to drop the oil pan for the cam install. Well, probably is the first sbc I took a starter off. Always been Pontiac v-8s in the past and remembered them having shims. It cranked the motor just fine before the teardown. Is any at all required just to be safe?

If it started fine before it should still be the same, unless you change starters. I've only worked on 1 small block chevy that needed shims and that was an old 70 C/10 pickup, I finally got it shimmed correctly. I hear newer trucks all the time that sound like they need them, nothin sounds the same as a chevy that needs shims
