have you double checked ALL your grounds? power is one thing but requires ground to complete the circuit

the ecm/memcal has to have power/ground to function properly. if it doesn't you will not get spark/fuel. either it's not getting power or it may be bad? just throwing some idea in the air. maybe some can be of more help?

This is just a WAG but. . .
When I put my MSD 8570 (w/magnetic output) distributor into my SD 730 setup with the module mounted outside of the distributor (of the firewall actually) I had to ground the module where the screws hold it down, which is normally through the distributor plate. The wiring harness being plugged into it did not provide this ground path and it would not fire a bit.
Is it possible your wiring from the module inside distributor is not making it to ground? Easy to check, just test from the screw that holds down the module to a known good ground.
Like I said, just a guess.

Max57,
You just proven that the coil, cap, rotor, and module are viable. You obviously have a problem with either wiring or the pickup/reluctor assembly on the '86 engine. If you are able to measure reference pulses ('scope?) then those possibilities are diminished.
If you pop the cap, you should see a filter capacitor nestled under the rotor on an '86:
