181 and 601 are also 305 castings that will port and polish nicely.

The one you want for a center-bolt application is 081. What you probably already have. Just do them up, there's plenty of room for improvement.

Someone around here had the beginnings of a great tech article on head porting. I wonder where that might be. Any help, Todd?

I read the article by Daniel Burke on here . NICE ....but it didn't really get into casting numbers and what not .........I was hopeing to get my heads done by someone .I am very limited with space ...and don't have the place to do it on my own .......heck I am doing my LCA's and PH bar ...and all the other stuff in a parking lot LMAO

***** edit **** I have two castring numbers that are centerblot heads 14101081 is one ( probably mine) ...then these 14102187.....any know which one is the better alternateive between the two ?

It's not worth it to pay someone - could get new heads for that. It's not hard to do, I'm doing a set of 416's as we speak. Electric die grinder ($50) and electric router variable speed switch ($30)from harborfreight.com, some bits from discount-tools.com (~$35), protective goggles, an electric outlet, and a table outside to work on (flying metal makes too much mess inside).

If you want more specifics, email me jw_baum@yahoo.com

I have NO way of doing this, where I live prevents me from doing it ....plus I ain't going throw various amounts of castings ...to perfect this .......I want it done right ....and the first time. Although the tech articles are helpfull ...they do absolutly nothing for me ......ya .. " relieve the port a little" ......how much is a little ....this takes a very skilled hand in my eye .....and I ain't messing up my heads to find out how . Sure I love to learn this stuff ...but not when it can mean weither or not I drive my car this season. Plus I would want some one experienced there to see ....just how much is " enough" . I appreciate the knowlege involved in doing this right ......

this ain't like doing your first oil change.

thanx for any more advice ....

Yeah, yeah

Anyway, D's89IROCZ, stop freakin' out and follow the link at the end of the sig for a good how-to on porting 305 heads. Yes, even YOU can do it (after all, I did it!)

....
Definitely the 081 casting. The 187 casting has decent runner design and fast burn chambers but the incoming fuel and air gets restricted right before the intake valve with a cast in shroud which is very hard to remove because of water passages.
