Are these the right heads?
I took my heads to be rebuilt, and they ended up being 2 different heads
one was from a truck. The shop said they had another set of heads that'd work that they'd give me for an extra $20 per head, so I said okay. I've already got them on the engine, I was about to put the altenator bracket on and it didn't seem right...Maybe i'm forgetting something? I don't know.
This is the casting number and what I got from Mortec.com:
14102193...87-up...305/350......1.94"/1.5" valves
My car is a 1987 350 L98. The guy said I had a 2193 and a 2191 head on it before. I didn't check the casting numbers before I took them in. Thanks.

Sounds like you kind of got boned all the way around.... all of those are garbage TBI swirl-port heads.
The right ones for your motor are 083 casting. THe heads are the single most important thing as to how much power you get out of an engine; if you aren't happy with the amount of power it has, especially the upper RPMs, put the right ones on there. Should make a noticeable difference over those others, even with TPI on it.

I haven't fired the engine, so I'm going to take the heads back to the machine shop for a refund. I found a place that has rebuilt 083 heads for $150/head, the same I paid for the 2193 heads. The machine shop guy didn't understand why I didn't like the heads.
Can someone PLEASE give me some facts about the 2193 heads and the 083 heads? Like a linke to flow charts or something? That would be very helpful in the refund process. Thanks.

P.S. I'm putting these on a Holley StealthRam, SLP 51006 cam, and hedman shorty headers.

I wish I had a pic.... this is one of those "worth 100 words" situations....
There's this giant slab of metal kind of all around the valve guide, that looks a little bit like an auger. Its purpose is to act as a ramp to make the mixture swirl as it enters the chamber, which is supposed to increase low-end torque and fuel mileage. However, it does so at the penalty of obliterating flow. It's real hard to get rid of because it's so much metal.
The 083 heads are more or less normal SBC heads. They respond well to porting. They have similar flow characteristics and potential to the old double-hump heads.

could you tell me what these heads were found on? the guy said he got them off of a 350 and that's why he thought they were the same. as well as them both being centerbolt.

Camaro and Firebird with TPI 350s... nothing else
The swirl port heads came on everything else with 350s, namely trucks and Caprices. They fit the same, but there's more to it than just "fit".

I'm reviving this post because I have just found out I have 193 heads on my L98 reman. Now if a L98 NEVER came with anything but 083 casting heads, than how can a L98 remanufactured engine with 193 heads be considered a L98 at all?
The heads do NOT flow the same so.....ARGH!!! This is so frustrating, I spend lots of money on this reman, and it turns out that the heads are NOT the right ones.

I have pics of those POS heads.
Here's the swirl port RB is talking about.
Although I have to say, the overall runner size is rather large. I cc'ed one of them and came up with 168cc's. Not horribly small, but the "swirl" port really intrudes into the flow path.
Ignore the port job. I was going to throw them on a 350 for my '83 C10 pickup TRUCK since that's what they're made for. I figured I'd spend a little time (which I have a lot of) to clean them up to get a little more pulling power from the truck.

That port job looks similar.... I did a set of 193's like that, cut the swirls down to the top of the valve guides and enlarged the bowls quite a bit. It made a pretty big difference in power on my trick from what it had. I have another set of 193's I got laying around (picked them up to practice my porting skills when I was a novice), one of these days I'm going to port them extensively, cutting out the entire swirl and hogging out the bowl area then I'll get them flowed just to see what they'll do. I might be able to make a good set of superstock heads out of these castings...
