IIRC, the staggered starter is for a 168 T plate, and the straight bolt pattern is for the 153T (12-34/") flywheel.

  1. Cut off all the teeth with a cold chisel or Sawzall. Put them in a bag, then count them;
  2. Mark one of the teeth with paint. Start counting as you rotate the engine around one full revolution. Stop counting when you reach the paint mark again;
  3. Measure the diameter of the flywheel. A 12-3/4" flywheel should have 153 teeth, and a 14" flywheel should have 168 teeth;
  4. Look at the starter mounting bolts. If they are in line, you should have the smaller 153T flywheel. If the inner bolt is offset, you should have the larger 168T flywheel.

My W.A.G. is that you have the smaller one unless you have a truck engine or perhaps a 400 CID.
