my car rattles over bumps and is a rough ride...help!

I am thinking about getting another car because it is SUCH a rough and noisy ride. I don't mind hearing the exhaust, but I don't like it sounding like it's falling apart whenever I go over a discrepency in the road. Hehehe...discrepency....big word....anyway, what can I do to correct this? To make it a smoother and quieter ride? Does anyone else have this problem?

Well if you dont like the ride then buy a CrownVic. Hell all our cars ride like that. Its called being able to handle. If it ain't rough it ain't going to handle. I think Monroe has a new shock out that lessen the inital impact of the bump. But the only way you will get a softer Ride is to Sale it. Personally if you complain about that you dont deserve a thirdgen. GET OVER IT!!!!!

I have to agree with 89IROC the suspension is way too stiff and klye I just spent $1500.00 on a whole new front suspension, new tie rods, struts, springs and so on and it still rides like a go cart. Oh well I still love my pos.

mine is the same way and its not a 3rd gen, ride is stiff, but for the rattle's you just have to hunt for them and see whats loose, I have the same prob and part of mine is one wore out hings, and loose door (guts). just have to go through and see whats moving thats not supposed to be and tighten it down as far as the ride being stiff/bumpy, part of sports cars enjoy it!

I get rattles from the rear of the car. I looked under there and there are these metal coils around the brake lines, and those rattle against the metal brake lines when I go over a bump. Sounds like the car is falling apart when I go over bumps.

Hehehe.....
as quoted by Kyle..."Personally if you complain about that you dont deserve a thirdgen."
That is by far the most RETARDED thing I have heard all day. I think we would all like to make our third gen's the best we possibly can. As you can tell, I would like to make mine a smoother ride or just not as noisy. Anyway, sorry...I just had to laugh at how dumb he sounded. Thanks to the rest of your responses. I appreciatte it. I have been having this dilemna for a while. I've also been wanting t tops or a convertable but I just love my IROC! I sure wish it didn't make the rattles it did. I think the main reason it does it because the rear hatch is screwed up. Oh well. We'll see what happens!

I've got bad shocks on the back of my 89 RS.
The only rattles I have found has been the jack and small donut spare tire. I haven't found the right combination of foam rubber sheets between the tire, jack and lug wrench. They just keep on jarring loose. My hatch pull-down was broken, but I fixed it. That did get rid of some of the rattles.

Its very hard to have great handling and great ride.If you want better ride and less handling then get V6 springs/shocks.My 85 2.8 camaro rides better than my 82 Z28 which ride better than my 87 IROC.So pick the level of ride/handling that you want

My car rattles like a POS too, but other than that i like it. Some things to check are the door and hatch seals, they will compress over time and allow motion. Also the door hinge pins...see if the door will move up-n-down when it is opened. A good friend of mine bought an 88 GTA in 1988...it did not rattle, so there is hope. Also SFC's are supposed to help a lot.

Yeah, rattles are arguably a fact of life with these cars. You can keep 'em rattle free with enough maintenaince, but it's tough!

I just had the passenger door panel off to work on the slow window and noticed a bad rattle while working on the door (the rattles are louder with the panels off). I bumped and pecked and shook, but couldn't find the rattle. It was near the rear of the door and eventually I determined it was up high, too. I put my hand on the reinforcement bar and the rattle stopped! The tail end of the upper reinforcement bar was rattling against the door skin. I injected a little of that expanding foam sealant behind it and voila! The rattle is gone and the door closes with a nice, solid, clunk.

I'v got a minor rattle somewhere in the dash that I just can't find, though...

Rattles are the pits. I have so many that I actually sometimes drive on the wrong side of the road to avoid the rattles. After I installed SFC the cat and 3" exhaust hit and would bang so load that the stereo was no match. I also found that my front drivers strut is making the worste rattle ever. Sounds like 2 pieces of metal hitting. Even over a pebble the car will rattle. So I'm dynamat and bilstein all around and eibach springs. Hopefully this will cure most of the rattles. I have to say, the shocks take a lot after the tower brace and SFC and LCA and panhard install so I'm not surprised I have rattles. The car is just so tight.

Another "fun" rattle that my car likes to reproduce is caused by the two metal supports that criss-cross in front of the radiator.

They'll hit each other and vibrate VERY loudly... there's a piece of hose between 'em (not sure if that's factory or not), but the hose likes to slide down, and it's "rattle time" again! I solved it with some duct tape

I also had the heat sheilds over the exhaust rattling... some strategically placed (read: far from exhaust pipes) heater hose (sliced lengthwise) also worked great.

You need to get some subframe connectors. Most of your body squeaks and rattles will stop, but you'll have to find and isolate the rest yourself.
