Someone tell me what this is!

On my new Camaro, there's this plastic 'sphere' sitting in the engine bay. It's not connected to anything, it's just THERE. WTF is it and should it be connected to something???

I have that on my car. I was going to remove it, but my dad said it was a vacuum tank of sorts to operate the flaps that control the heating and cooling ducts in the car.

vacuum tank. It should be connected to your cruise control, if not, make sure you don't have a vac leak.

There's nothing connected to it at all. Can someone point the way to a vacuum diagram so I can hook the thing up? If this is the reason my cruise control doesn't work, that'll be one problem down and a few to go! Thanx guys!

I also have mine below the charcoal canister, I'm am pretty positive it's for emissions, there is a vacum line that goes from the sphere to one of the charcoal canister connections if my meory serves my correctly, I'll also check tomorrow.

Can you get cruise control on a 4 speed '79 Camaro? I thought cruise was only for automatics, BUT when we got the 350 i have now out of the '79 Z28, it was a 4 speed car (i saw the car before the motor was out) but when i got the engine, i noticed that cruise control ball... but mine was the size of a baseball.

results

oookkkkk... I was wrong about the emisisons stuff lol.

My sphere goes & connects to a splitter, one end goes to where I can't see, the other goes to the connector on the back pass. side of the plenum! you know the one next to the fuel reg. connector.

How wierd is that.

It is a vacum resevoir. It is used for Vacum controlled cruise It helps keep the vacum up and charged basically. I would only remove it if you have no cruise ....

It is a vacuum resevoir. It's main purpose is to provide enough vacuum to operate the AC, heating and defrost ducts inside the car. The doors in the heater/ac are controlled by vacuum actuators. It stores vacuum so you can operate the ac/heater doors at any engine speed or load. If you have cruise control it also supplies constant vacuum to allow for speed adjustment.

So I'd leave it in there if you want your ac vents to work.

Removing it won't affect your engine vacuum as long as you plug up the vacuum lines/ports that run to it. I dont have cruise sontrol on my car and I never did either and I have it. My dad used to work at a Chevy dealership in the 70's and he said it was for the heating ad cooling ducts like Arntzman said. But I suppose it could do something involing cruise control. However, if you want to have your cruise control work and your air ducts open and close, I would leave it in.

ROTFLMAO Funniest thing I've heard all day Rob!!

Seriously though, is this 'vacuum reservoir' only there on certain years of thirdgen? I have a 89 GTA with working cruise control that doesn't have it. Or is it under the charcoal canister on my year of car?
