Engine "sputter" on power demand

My 85 firebird's engine (2.8 V-6 MFPI) ( just rolled over 92K original) just began to "sputter" when I first accelerate or on demand type situations. This has happened before about three-four months ago. I changed the plugs and it went away. I'm also getting a code 44. Any suggestions?

Beast,

Your ECM could be right. Start by looking for a lean condition. The fuel delivery checks include testing the pressure and flow of the system. The injector rails should be holding about 38 PSIG at idle.

Have you changed the fuel filter recently? Changed the oxygen sensor withing the last 30K miles?
