engine sound

ok i know this is prolly a dumb question but heres the scoop, my friend has a chevelle, its a 69 i blevieve, but anways, its got a 396 and boy in neutral, if you rev it, its got the "meaty roar" to it. Now is this the engine or the exhaust? If i put a 350 in my camaro will it have the "meaty roar" to it? Im just curious, im not gonna drop a new engine for the sound but i was just wondering because it seems like newer cars with big engines dont have the cool "meaty roar". You know what i mean?

The exhaust note is a direct function of the frequency and volume of exhaust gasses and valve timing (with a correctly-sized exhaust system). So a larger displacement engine will have a slightly deeper tone than a weenie little engine, generally speaking.
