Problem please help

ok.... I reset timing, and I can get car to idle perfect.... I go to put it in gear and it will stumble and backfire with the littlest of gas I give it, or it will just die. Funny thing is that I can drive the car if I leave the wire dissconnected, the one you are supposed to disconnect when seting timing (tan wire/black strip, by heater box), it will run, doesn't seem to have all its power but I can atleast drive it, but it heats up quickly and I saw exhaust manifolds were glowing red, at night, under no light.

What could be the problem, controller mod, EST, vack leak, egr. I do have a vavle cover gasket that I found to be split, could that cause a vac leak?

I have a '88 IROC Z-28, 5.7L, TPI, L98 bone stock except for MSD 6a...

Possibly soon for sale...
Thanks in advance

what did you set your base timing to?

and did you remove your ESC connector when you set your base timing?

At first I left it just as it was at zero then played around a little with it, turned dist, then I remember to disconnect the wire. I probably went wrong there, and screwed myself, needed to disconnect ESC wire before playin with dist. But I did go back and reset it with the ESC wire disconnected. Its advanced just a little. I would say no more than 8*..

Would it just be better that I reset timing completely again. Since I know how to do it. but then ok when I reset it, I disconnect the ESC wire fist and set the timing where. at 0* or do I leave it disconnected and start it up, and then set the timing, couldn't I just leave it at 0*?

Please and Thanks

Yep.. I don't know what is up with it, maybe I am doing nothing right, but at least it will run somewhat so I am making alittle more progress.
