HAH! Here's a fun one for anyone who knows the dash circuitry!!!
Ok, I got a new steering column a while back ( almost 1 year) because the old one fell apart. It was perfect until my car was broken into and these guys tried to steal my car. They pried the crap out of the column and tried to pull the ignition rod up to start her up. Anyway, they couldn't do it and I have since fixed the ignition to run properly, I never have any trouble with the key.
Here's the dilemma:
My car has been making some sort of BUZZING noise originating from the dash. It would only do it before when the voltage was really low. Now it's doing it whenever the rpm's are at about 1,350 or so. So it goes like this....rev it up, shift, let out the clutch to stop, passes by 1,350 rpms...BUZZ...idle, no buzz.
Whenever the car has low voltage, like below 14 volts it does it too. If the power windows are down and I hold the buttons down, it'll do it.
WHAT IS THIS BUZZER THING AND WHAT IS IT'S PURPOSE? I don't recall having it on my 91', 83', or 84' Trans Am. I'm sure you guys can imagine how annoying it is. As soon as I know what it's purpose is, I'll be able to diagnose the problem and fix it, but as of now, I don't know what this buzzer is hooked to or how I can fix/dis-connect it.
Thanks.....Car is the first one in the sig= 1984 Z-28

tell ya what, see if you have an rpo code of UT1. I just powered up my T/A, is Japanese spec, with this code, and it has a hella beep when you first turn the ignition on. The battery is low, and the rpo code comes up as a low voltage warning. CHk into it.

Hmmmm.....
Don't know if this has anything to do with it but, the computer is disconnected too.
Where do I check RPO codes? Hope it's not the door jamb.

I don't suppose the choke light comes on?
Last time I had that issue with the "buzzing" at low voltage it was the choke heater relay, which was chattering.

Hmmm.....
The choke is not hooked up, the wire for it is just sitting under the engine compartment. Maybe it's been brushing up on something? Where is this relay located?
I don't need it cause I'm no longere CC, I have a 4 barrel carb now.
The light does not come on though, but the check engine light is always on of course.

Hahaha. OK, the relay is in the convenience center, under the dash on the driver's side to the right of the steering column. It should drop down like the fuse box.
The relay should be a green rectangular thing.

Wow.
You nailed it right on the head!
Yesterday I just could not take it anymore and pulled over to trace the sound. It was that green relay and I yanked it out with a screwdriver.
What exactly is this relay for? I'll need to put it back in if I ever sell it and Iput all the CC crap back on I am assuming.

It runs power to the electric choke coil and is also hooked into the alternator circuit some way. Sometimes an alt going bad can cause the relay to chatter.

As long as the alternator is charging the car properly, write it off as the relay going bad... that's what happened to me.
