Tach connection

I'm putting my 406 in my Firebird. It had a 3.1 V-6. There is a grey wire from the coil that I believe is the tach signal wire. Can I connect this to the tach output of my MSD 6AL box directly and the tach read properly?
Thanks,,, Matt

your readings would not be accurate, it'll give you a higher than actual reading coz it was calibrated for 6 cylinders...
i think...

I am not positive but a Tach is a Tach I was never aware of any calibrations made for a 4 6 or 8 cylinder engine I always that a Tach was a Tach.

a tach measures the number of pulses the coil makes, for an 8 cylinder engine 8 pulses equals 2 rpms, coz the complete firing order cycle rotates the crankshaft 2 whole turns no matter what engine it is (3,4,5,6,8etc cylinders), so tachs have different calibrations for different numbers of cylinders. my tach has settings for 4,6,8 cylinders. the readings i get when i set it to 4 cylinders is twice that when i set it to 8. at least that's what i understand... anyone correct me if i'm wrong please...
