If you are going to add a lot of power to a convertible, you have to stiffen it up to avoid bending the frame with the increased torque.

If you have an RS you have 305TBI
If you have a Z28 you have a 305TPI. You need to make serious power to worry about the convertible frame. Figure out what you have, then come back.

A few things, first add subframe connectors... second, save your money.
Seriously an RS convertible is not the car to modify for performance. For what you'd spend you'd be further ahead to save your money and get a 91-92 l98 or lb9 Z or Formula hardtop.

The convertible platform wasn't designed to handle anymore performance than a 305tpi. Add into that the extra weight of the convertible, and the shortcomings of the 305tbi equipment, and it makes for a difficult project.

If after reading everything I've typed up to this point, you still want to mod it, here are the big ones.

Get a different aircleaner, L69 or open element. Get a good set of headers. a 3" high flow cat, and a good 3" catback.
From there you'll be at about the limits of TBI. Most people don't agree with me, but in most cases they're biased. Make your own call. You could do heads, cam, and intake, but the TBI won't really support it very well.

Hey man, I love the fact that you want to modify a '92 RS convertible. I have done about all i can with the 305tbi motor and I have decided it is a piece of crap motor. I am currently ripping out the 305/700r4 setup and I'm putting in an LT1/6spd setup. I just finished subframe connectors and I believe the frame is strong enough to handle the increase in horsepower and torque. If not, I'm putting a rollbar in it. Anyway, it's still a thirdgen, and it's a good looking thirdgen at that. Oh, and for the weight difference between it and a coupe, it's minimal and with real horsepower, it won't matter. Good luck with the car.

I modified my 89 RS over the course of several years. ZZ4TPI, Edlebrock Hi-Flow intake, SLP runners, 24lb injectors, MSD6AL, SLP dual cold air intake (battery in the trunk), Mini Starter, IROC front sway and wonder bar, steering box and rag joint. WS6TA rear sway bar, Z28 rear springs, Herb Adams adj Panhard rod, SLP LCA, Alston SFC, Aluminum Drive shaft, 3:23 posi disc rear, 2040 Stall behind my stock 700R4. My interior has the t/a door cup holders, 300ZX seats, Saturn/Delco CD player (it fits perfect!) 145mph/5500redline speedo/tach. All this in a hard top would be a blast, now think about doing this with the top down, smoking some jackazzz in a 5.0GT! The only thing different I would have done is start with a Z28 or IROC convt for the better suspension stuff. Press on!

Drew...
You might be right if all he wants is straight out performance...but a 'vert has an appeal all it's own, and there's plenty you can do to make them more than respectable performers. Not to knock anyone else's car here...or take away from anything..but I wouldn't drive anything but a 'vert. And mine runs just fine, making 300Hp on the TBI. It might be the upper limits of where I can take it...but 300 HP is still respectable power. And dropping that top on a warm summer night more than makes up for any extra weight I might be lugging around. Just my opinion...and of course, like you said...I"m biased
