Help! My IROC's dead.

I did a search, but could use alittle more help. I have an '89 IROC, with LB9 and 9,200 (yes that is correct) miles.

When the car is cold..like when it's been sitting for 4-5 hours or overnight....it will start and run rough. It may also die after afew minutes. When it's warm, it'll crank but won't restart. It will restart after afew hours.

There are no codes. I did get a 44 and 33, but I believe that they were owner induced during my feeble attempts to diagnose. When I cleared them they did no return.

Also, the A/C cycles on and off continously...like every second.

I figured I'd get a new ignition module, but the parts guy said that modules are not affected by heat soak, and suggested a pick-up coil.

What do you guys think?

Sounds fuel related to me.......I cannot remember but did you say you have a TPI?? Injectors could be going bad.......Also...check your fuel pressure on your fuel pump.

just a few guesses

What makes you say fuel related?

I guess what I'm really asking is...will a bad ignition module be affected by heat soak?

With 9,200 miles on it.. I'd assume that IROC to be pretty damn cherry..

It doesn't sound fuel related to me either, and could very well be ignition related..

I can't recall if '89 IROCs had the Cold Start Injector installed on them, but I'm gonna guess they do.. and urs might be going bad.. which would account for the rough idle at cold engine temperature..

But I'm leaning more towards an ignition problem, and yes.. heat soak WILL effect an ignition module..

The 89 cars did not have a cold start injector and I would guess your problem to be fuel related. If you have access to a fuel pressure gauge put it on, prime the system and watch the gauge. I bet you will see the pressure start dropping off pretty quick, if that is the case your injectors or regulator are leaking, making cold starts hard and hot starts harder.

1989 IROCs do NOT have the cold start injector. 1988 was the last year for that. The ignition module could very well be the problem. Have it tested.

One more thing guys. When I start the car, it is definately running rich. I can smell it, and it leaves a cloud of black smoke at start-up.

I brought up the A/C cycling rapidly on and off in case this means that there is a miss in ignition confusing it's operation. Am I off base on this?

Any input is appreciated.

The A/C compressor cycling rapidly means you are low on refrigerant. What you are seeing is the result of the low pressure cutoff switch turning off the compressor as soon as it is signaled to come on due to low pressure in the system caused by a low refrigerant level.

definitely a fuel problem. could be one of your injectors is sticking. hook up a fuel guage and watch the pressure. it's probably dropping to 0 right after you turn the motor off.

Thanks guys.

Looks like I've got 5 dead or nearly dead injectors.

What are good replacements....and how much should I expect to pay?

off topic but are you ever on the chicago board on the bottom of this site? we are having a gathering at the end of may hopefully 50 thirdgens....hope to see you there.

I know some people go with the SVT mustang injectors since they're not too much $$$ although that's usually with some prom burning too.....best bet ask on the TPI board, I'm running carb so i'm no help
