Bore it baby

I do know what it is to bore an engine. but
A. Why would I want to?
B. What does it involve?
C. Can you do it to a 305, if so what does it become.
D. Is it worth doing?

The only good reason to bore an engine is if you are rebuilding it. Boring it out smooth the piston bore walls. You need to have an engine/machine shop do this. A 305 bored .030" over becomes a 310. You have to take apart the engine to do this, not wort hit unless you are doing a full rebuild.

A) Only two reasons I can think of to do it. 1. The cylinder walls have ring ridge or other imperfections serious enough that simply honing them isnt adequate to get good ring seal, or 2. to increase displacement

B) It involves using a lathe to remove iron from the walls of your cylinder. You'd need to hire a good machine shop to do it.

C)You can indeed.

D) If the engine block needs it, yes. But I havent run across any machine shops yet who have recommended it simply to increase displacement. Its not really worth it to add a horsepower or two, especially in light of the fact that you can only bore the block so far.

Any engine can be bored.I bored a 2.8 out.It didn't need it but I wanted it.I gained a hole 3 cubic inches. And I gained 3mph in the 1/8 and lowered my ET's by 3 tenths of a second. They say it raises your compression but I'm not sure of that.
I know it isn't much but how many people do you know who can say they have a 2.8 bored .030?
Do I think it was worth it? Hell yeah.

I bored out my Nissan's 2.4 .030 over only because I spun a few bearings, ooops. The truck (go-kart) is sold now so I've got money to burn on some 305 S/R Torquers. Maybe while everything is out, I'll slap some headers in

Boring takes the inperfections out of the cylinders making them round again. Most of the time the cylinders will have taper in them (smaller diameter on one end of the cylinder)after years of wear. Also they get a little out of round. If you can't hone it to be true again, than it should be bored out to make it true,or round, and the same size from top to bottom. Hope that helps.
