70's 305 engines!

How do these compare with 80's? Any differences?

They suck.

They were all 2-barrels. The heads came with 1.74" valves instead of the 1.84" ones in later years.

Avoid them.

They are much ****tier, unless heads are swapped for some 416's.

the late 70s wasnt the best time for engines in general, nevermind a 305...

I'll have to take a look at my 78 El Camino 305 2-barrel and see if it has that casting.... what a pig of an engine that one is.... although, it has gone 345,000 miles so far, with the intake never removed

How can I tell if the heads are 416's? With the crappy engine and all the rust, sounds like this car could be an excellent parts donor.

My car only has 81,000 on the odometer and it's running a 70's 305....interesting.

You have to remove a valvecover to read the casting# on the
top of the head, between the valve springs.

As far as i know, the '70s 305ci blocks and '80s blocks are identical.. its the other stuff that makes the '70s 305s crappy.
