Very high Oil Pressure!

Well, it only started doing this a little while back, but The oil pressure in my '89 L03 TBI 305 has been high. Starting out in the morning, my gauge is pegged out past 60, and it doesn't even try to go down! Later on as it warms up a lot, It'll go down to 45 or so, but when I barely get on it, It pegs out again, and stays up there past 60 even for a while after I've gotten off of the gas! My oil level is where it should be, I changed it not too long ago! I even checked the connections to my oil sending unit! Can anyone help?

I've heard of certain firebirds having high volume oil pumps so it wouldn't be a problem if that's the case. Sorry Dan, this probably didn't help much, but check the rpo codes and see if that's in there.

Whats the problem?

Mine always does that. When it is hot and at idle, it will be about 30psi, but on the highway it is 55psi+. When cold, it pegs past 60. I don't see a problem.

I just thought my oil pressure was running real high. I know it will go up past 60 when your racing, but it just stays on up there and won't drop back down! Nothing has happened to my engine, so I don't know if anything is wrong or not!

Two things come to my mind: perhaps the gauge is inaccurate, and perhaps you oil filter is clogged, and now you are going thru the pump's bypass

There is a releaf valve on the oil pump that is not opening up either the spring is bad or it is full of sludge, yuck, you might want to put some engine flush in and change the oil.
