89 GTA Performance?
89 GTA Performance?
Hello, I might buy an 89 GTA with a 5.7L that is completely stock. What do these run in the quarter mile stock? Stock they have I think 230 HP with 340 lbs of torque, and with the N10 free-flow-car option they have 240 HP and 350 lbs of torque. I am not sure if this GTA has the N10 option, but I would cut the cats out as soon as I got it anyways! The 91-92 Camaro's with the 240horse engine supposedly run low 14s. Is an 89 GTA lighter or heavier than a 91-92?
If I had the 230 Horse engine, and if I cut out the cats, that should net 15 HP right? Since the free-flow cat option adds a whole 10, completely ditching them should yield even more. So with 245 HP, what would the GTA run in the 1/4?
What are some good initial mods? Can I get into the high 13's without opening up the engine? ( Rockers, Exhaust, cut out cats, gutted MAF, etc?)

you can definately get 13s without going crazy. some good initial mods are porting your plenum, tb coolant bypass, relocating mat sensor, synthetic fluids, good spark plugs and wires. k&n airfilter, airfoil, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, exhaust work. 13s wont be that hard. read my signature for other mods you can do. good luck

If the engine is OK, expect high 14's or at the very least low 15's. Anything higher than that and there's something wrong.
You might luck out and get one that can do mid 14's.. Quite a few people claim this, although I've never seen it.. I run 14.8's so it's very believable.
The GTA is a heavy third-gen with all the power stuff.. High 13's with free mods and some bolt-ons (like headers and a decent cat back) might be obtainable..

My car with t-tops weighs 3570 Ibs. First mods you should do is cut two large windows in your air filter can and port the mass air flow sensor (screens/fins). You will go from no tire spin from smashing the gas to peeling out all the way in first.
My best track time so far with the mods and 35k one the car are
60' 2.186 with out steve's LCA brackets
1/8 9.269 75.979MPH
1/4 14.409 96.181MPH altitude at 2270'
Average 1/4 times 14.44

Stock '89 GTAs with the 5.7 liter have 225hp. Stock '89 GTAs with the RPO N10 have 235hp. Very easy to check for N10 option. Just look under passenger-side chassis area for the two converters.

GM High Tech Performance Magazine is currently modifying a 88 Firebird Formula (350) into an 11 second machine. You should buy this magazine, in it they provide info on the mods they are doing on the Bird.
