Borla vs Flowmaster vs DEQ
I've got a single stock muffler with 2 tail pipes on my '85 Z28. I've been looking through the Borla and Flowmaster catalogs... and it looks like Flowmaster is louder, but Borla has the HP advantage. I was wondering what is a great exhaust for my car (/w 305) to make it louder and get some HP out of it, yet staying within DEQ specs. I'm thinking dual exhaust, with a new cat.... but I don't know which is best. What have you guys out there done, and what do you suggest? Thanks.

OH yeah, one more thing... What about Headers? True headers? Will that still pass DEQ? I'm in Washington State, and in all the cars I and people I know have gone through, they don't open the hood... so....?

by true headers you are talking about full length headers
and if you are. I probley wouldn't recomend because i have full length headers in my 85Z and we had to raise the front an inch and we also put taller tire on the back and now i have airshocks
but with all that stuff. I will still hit my headers creeping over speed bumps or if im on a bad road those headers make a hell of a noise when they hit
i would probley go with block huggers if i wanted a handling street car so i could lower it just a little
and i dont know about the inspection crap cause im in the middle of nowhere oklahoma

Borla and Flowmaster are both awsome, i think flowmaster is better for its price than borla is, borla is just $250 more becaus the systems made out of stainless steel. You can get a flowmaster catback for around $235 and add more mods w/ that extra money a borla woulda cost and come out ahead.

Put the Hooker shorty headers on my brother-in-laws '82 Z28 and it was soooo easy. One went in from the top and 1 from the bottom. Then added 2.5" pipe, gutted cat and added Flowmaster exhaust........works perfect.Headers were only $135 in Summit.

What do you mean by gutted cat? I know I can't really do anything to it except replace it, or I wont be legal in my state. Also is Dual Exhaust Flowmaster style best? and which series muffler produces best sound?
If you intend to own the car for a long time and you're as **** about it as I am about mine, get the Borla. From everything i've read, they're a better exhaust than the Flowmaster, and from working in a steel plant I can tell you:
1. The quality of their metal work, especially their bending, is pretty damn good. The welding is okay, but it's pretty good for a company that probably doesnt focus on that.
2. It was worht it to me to have 304 stainless under there instead of a normal mild steel.
On the other hand, I never really cared what my car sounded like, just so long as when I got into the gas it got up and went. So I never bothered to compare the sound to that of a Flowmaster. If you want somethign that sounds BA and is a good value for the $, Flowmaster is probably a better pick.
You might also want to look into a Hooker system. I've heard from several sources that their aerochamber mufflers are just *loud* and make a V8 sound downright mean.

I got a 90 Formula 350 and live in Seattle. I went to Walts Muffler in Shoreline for $150 installed they put on a Flowmaster 50 searies and has two pipes out the back. I already had the 3 inch exhaust with dual cats so did not see any reason to go with one of the more expensive setups. I have a set of SLP headers which are stainless steel and cost $350 on sale at this time, they are emmisions legal. Bought 2 new 2 1/2 in high flow cats from C & L performance for $150 a pair. SLP and C & L are both online. have fun. any Q's write back to Waformula350@hotmail.com
