Installing Distributor

I am attempting to install my new MSD distributor, however it fits down into the engine except for the last ~3/8 of an inch. I have attempted to turn the oil pump shaft but it doesn't seem to want to fit down there no matter which direction the pump shaft is facing.

Also one of the rubber O-rings on the distributor broke, how important are these?

I recently installed my distributor with a little difficulty. I too attempted to turn the oil pump shaft but to no avail. Try bumping the engine a couple of times. As long as the clamp which holds the distributor in place is not too tight, the drive should align itself with the oil pump shaft. It did for me anyway.

I usually just turn the oil pump shaft a little bit at a time. You've got to position it so that the distributer shaft will grab it as it's seating, not when it's fully seated.
