Here's an example. From the factory, the car comes with an AM/FM radio as standard equipment. A cassette deck and the Bose system would be optional, and each have their own RPO codes.
But sometimes, a customer could order the car with no radio or speakers whatsoever, and save money. In this case, the RPO code might say "AM/FM radio delete". Like how the 1LE cars all have the air conditioner delete option.
I'm just taking a wild guess here, but perhaps your car has an options package that included a 140mph speedometer, or a "trip meter," but for some other reason, the optional speedometer was deleted.

I guess delete just means that your car didn't get that part. Like if it says "AC delete", then your car won't have AC.
Also, how did you get that degree mark in your sig? I just used the * but I like yours better.
RSS says that too. Look below. Actually, I think I was the first person to ever have it in their sig. But I'm glad that other people are using it. Ford sucks!!!

92 RS (Rice Sucks) 305 TBI 5 speed T-tops AC stock 16 inch aluminum wheels
14X3 open element, 3.73 gears, posi, dual 2 inch bendable exhaust, no mufflers or cats (kinda loud), 160* thermostat, relocated IAT, weight loss, lots-o-free mods and one hell of a crazy driver.

I tend to agree with Chris on this one. I doubt that it would be legal for GM to sell a new car without any speedometer, so it probably means you didn't get an optional one that was included in a package, and instead got the standard one.
Now why they would delete this is something I couldn't answer. Do you by any chance have a km speedo, or was your car sold in Canada with a mph one? Only things I can think of.

Yeah, what was said. Like if you order a car with a package called "sport group" or something, on say, a V6 mustang. They allow you to select Spoiler Delete so you will have everything in the sport ground exept for the spoiler.

We old DOS guys remember a lot of the old ASCII codes by heart. Hold down the [ALT] key while entering [2] [4] [8] on the numeric keypad (Num Lock ON, of course). The resultant character should be the ASCII "degree" symbol. There are about 254 more of them, too. Your other option is to insert a superscript lowercase "o" after the text, if you know the codes...
As far as a speedometer adapter or speedometer key delete, this usually accompanies an RPO 'D9A' - a VSS. The different speedo heads required drive gears other than the standard item, so the build sheet reflects that change.
