wierd AC noise

when i turn on my AC it makes a loud, almost grinding noise. now it hasn't really been used for a few months. do you think it just needs lubrication or is it going out? when it is on it blows out cold air, it just makes that noise and the belt on it flops around. any suggestions?

Mine makes a noise that sounds like a grinding sound every few seconds. It started about three years ago, and I had some a/c oil put in, but it didn't stop. I don't know what it is, but my A/C works fine. I usually wind up putting in about 1-2 lbs of r-12 every year and it will probably quit now that I have said this .
