fuel leaking from overflow vent at filler
fuel leaking from overflow vent at filler
I've got an '83 z with the 4brl 305. It seems to be leaking gas out from around the filler or overflow vent. The more I drive the worse it leaks. I can smell the gas while driving and now have an ugly stain on the side of my car. I have been under it and haven't seen any kinked hoses and I have replaced the gas cap. Anyone have any ideas?
Also, I have poor throttle response in 1st gear. It will wind out, then break the tires free when shifting to 2nd. Is that normal? Just bought the car a month ago, I know the carb is new but not sure what kind it is. The old lady that owned it had all the work done at a local dealership so it is probably stock gm.

Some thoughts
ceaser76,
Most folks here are much more knowledgable than I but I will try and help.
The gasoline leaking out might be just your fuel cap not fitting on correctly. My 1983 T/A had a simular problem. It is very tricky getting the cap threaded on correctly.
The problem with it winding out in first could be a misadjusted kickdown cable. If you have a 700r4 tranny like I do then it gets all its info on the throttle position from a cable that attaches to the carburator throttle linkage. There is an adjustment procedure for that in the transimission section. Check out this link for info on the Throttle Valve adjustment. http://www.tvmadeez.com
I would also read some of the threads in the transmission section for hints on why this is happening to you. I got my 83 T/A about a month ago also. It is a neat car but when they are that age they usually need a LOT of TLC.
Good luck,
