Wierd acceleration- what's going on????

This is a problem I've been having for quite some time- I haven't been able to find out what's going on, maybe someone here has run into the same problem... but here goes....

On somewhat rare occasions the car (car being a 1984 T/A with stock 305 engine) would start accelerating on it's own. This happens whenever I give it medium to hard acceleration in any gear (5-speed manual) at around 2000rpm or above going at almost any speed (although it seems to happen more likely at highway speeds)- after letting up off the pedal the car feels like it's still trying to accelerate. Giving the pedal a brief jab with my foot would bring it out of it every time.

I did the obvious- checked the accelerator pedal and cable and there is no snagging that I can find. The return spring is still in place and I can't find any binding on the carb throttle shaft that would cause this. I also do not get any engine check codes coming across, either.

Anyone run into this sort of thing before?

Thanks!

Don't you hate it when that happens?
Unfortunately it's never fixed itself for me......

I was on a long trip home one time when my car started to do this, it was the throttle cable sticking.

Take some carb cleaner and clean the throttle linkage really good. Clean it real good and possibly change the spring and see what happens. Springs will weaken after being on a car 19 years...

Hmm..... do you mean it was sticking due to lack of lubrication, or was the cable worn to the point where it was 'catching' somewhere? I'm beginning to think that maybe I should just change out the cable even if it seems good, as well as hose down the carb linkage with Chemtool (although I have tried that before with no success- but it can't hurt to do it again). I take it it's not possible for something to be going wrong with the emissions system that could cause this, too?

88Camaro350, you're right about the spring tho- after 19 years it probably doesn't have the strength it once had. I'll look into getting that replaced, too....

Any other opinions out there? :hail:
