Effects of bad cat?

Can a bad catalytic converter cause a car to miss alot? Sometimes my car misses and finally kicks in, and then I get a huge whiff of sulfur. What are the effects of a cat going bad?

THe most severe problem I have encountered with a bad cat was the car would stall at highway speeds. It had NO power trying to accelerate and then would die.

I suppose a bad cat could cause missing and the rotten egg, sulfur smell is pretty commonly attributed to a bad cat.
