What is a plenum?

I know I'll probably lose points for having to ask, but after all, I am here to learn. TIA

Hey, don't sweat it. Thats what this board is all about. Soon, you will see a basic question like this and I hope you will go out of your way to answer it.
A plenum on our cars usually referes to the tpi injected cars. It's basicaly another word for intake manifold, but mainly refers to the upper part of the manifold that attatches to the runnners, which are the tubes that go from the upper part to the lower part.

on this forum plenum is generally referring to the top 'box' of the tpi unit where the runner tubes come out and go down to the manifold.
BUT
All manifolds have plenums, even carb manifolds. Its just an area of space after the throttle blades to provide some capacitance for the intake charge since each cylinder takes air in just a real quick pulse.. if you have a large room that all the cylinders can pull air from unrestricted its obviously gonna provide smoother less restricted operation. Generally the larger the plenum area the more high rpm power the manifold will be capable of producing with the right cam selection and cylinder heads.

The tpi unit has the plenum on the top, its right behind the throttle body, the long aluminum peice with the cooling fin like lines milled into it where the runners come out of. Thats the 'room' that those runners pull air from.

The only dumb question is a question not asked. We all have to start somewhere.
