Bad Fuel Pump or not???

Here's what I have, 1991 camaro RS 305 TBI, 5 speed.

Here's my problem:

1st-Sometimes when I start from a stop, the car will die (like it ran out of gas) for about 1/2 a second. Than it will kick back in and go like normal.

2nd-When I'm accelorating on the freeway the car jerks front and back (like I'm running out of gas) The higher gear I get the worse the jerking gets. (5th gear is the worse). But just crussing at a constant speed is fine. Only acceloration is bad.

3rd-When accelorating with the gas pedal to the floor, the car will sometimes kill for a fraction of a second (like problem #1) but kick back in and keep on going.

The car hasnt completly died yet, stop the crap listed above.

Here's my questions:

1.Could the problem be the fuel pump? (I just changed the fuel filter so it is not that)

2. If you think it is the fuel pump, is there a way to test it before I do all the work to replace it, just to find out that wasnt the problem.

3. Could it be the fuel injectors?

4. Could it have something to do with the transmission (I have a manual) I replaced the clutch last year so I dont think that went bad allready.

Any Ideas what I should do, I dont want to go through all the work of replacing the fuel pump if that is not the problem. I hope to do the repair this weekend so please give me some help.

That sounds like a fuel pump.
My old 96 V6 Camaro did the same thing you are talking about.
Heavy throttle it would start buck and jerk, light throttle it would drive fine.
That was expensive to fix that one since the pump is part of the intank assembly. $289 for the parts.

I'd get a fuel pressure gauge and mount it to your windshield and drive the car and watch the pressure. I think it should be around 14psi.

f it should be 14psi, and my pump is bad, will it read lower or higher?

Ok, I found a pressure gauge for $30.00 at partsamerica.com. I'll give it a try.

Thanks guys.

They are about $45 at any parts stores.
Pressure should go down I believe.

yea i think its your pump as you can see in another thread i posted it actually finally died on me. Here were my symptoms for about a month before it happend.

#1 stalling out on acceleration like it ran outta gas when the tank was full..then starting right back up no problems

#2 stalling out after a stop or while stopped

#3 irradic idiling on and off

#4 a gas smell while idiling or especially on startup

yesterday it finially went..wouldnt start at all

Ya, thats looks like me too. Should I bother spending the money on the pressure gauge since everybody thinks its the pump??

It's a good tool to have. If you have the cash get it.

well here is what i think...yea you should spend the money on a pressure guage for the fact that it will always come in handy especially with our cars. I actually am comtemplating buying one as well. But get that pump plus a fuel filter ( i think thats what caused my pump to go). Also i am positive it is my pump that went becuase when i try to start the car i dont hear the usual buzzing noise that you normally hear letting you know your pump is working. Before the car actually dies yes replace it.

Could a faulty fuel pump relay cause these problems too? Maybe a bad ground. Check the voltage and wiring first so you don't go through all that work for nothing.

zepher has a point...you know what i would test everything first totally, before replacing the pump. You just wanna be 100% positive it is the pump but you do wanna do your testing ASAP to single out the problem because if it is your pump it can die and leave you stranded at any time.

Ya I'm not driving the car today or this weekend, so I dont get stranded. What Should I test?

1. Replay wires
2. Fuel pressure

Anything else?

if you have a haynes or chiltons manual they should tell you the correct voltage you should be at and correct fuel pressure. Oh and start with those 2 things first, you should find your answer.

if you find it is your fuel pump and you are fixing this yourself, i suggest you should also buy a new fuel pump relay, oil pressure switch, gas proof sealer, as well as the fuel filter i had metioned above. Sometimes if your pump starts going bad it can put out a higher current then normal and it can effect they way those components run as well

UPDATE - UPDATE - UPDATE

Well, here is the story
Took about a week of on and off working to get the fuel pump replaced, and that wasnt the problem, So then we took off the distibuater cap all the metal prongs were all nasty, so I got a new cap, rotor, plugs and wires and it still ran like crap, until we realised we put the 5 and 3 wires on the wrong spot, Now it runs perfect (after 2 weeks of working on it).

So if your car ever has VIOLENT jerks when giving gas check under the distributer cap.

That's gotta suck after doing all that work to find out it's just two plug wires in the wrong place.

Glad to hear it's running good again.

No, I did need to change the cap, wires, and plugs. The jerking was caused by build up on the inside of the distribuater cap on the metel prongs. But when we put the new wires on we did it wrong and didnt know it when we went to test drive, Durring the test drive the car was still jerking, So we were like, ok now what. So we looked in the book and found out we had put the wires in the wrong spot. We switched them and took it out for another test drive and it ran great.

Oh well just another lesson learned.
