vortec machining
I just got a set of vortecs. I need to make them work with my cam, so im going to have the valve guides milled down. Did 906 castings come with self aligning rockers? Or should I get screw in studs and guideplates installed too?

I used 906 castings. They did use the self guided rockers. If you plan on any moderate lift cam, I would machine for studs, and guide plates.
If you're already machining the heads, there's almost no excuse NOT to install screwed studs. The guide plates are your call, and it may affect the depth of milling for the studs - usually about 0.250" for no plates, 0.400" with plates. If you go 0.400", there's usually enough stud to get the rockers positioned and adjusted right, but every valve train is a little different (and your cam profile is an unknown).

The cam has .488 lift and 234* duration, and the motor will probably rev up to about 6500 at the track. So I'm thinking about getting the springs, studs, and guideplates all done.

If you expect to buzz it to 6500 with that cam you'll need the
screwin studs, guideplates and larger 1.46" dia springs.
You'll find these heads are "torque heads"
Won't need much more than 6000 rpm with that cam.
You'll want a decent 1.46" spring like a comp 987 or a crane 99893

The torque part is a good point. I think almost every build up I have seen with these heads in the car mags made there power under 6k. I noticed mine have a lot of torque. A lot more than what I was use to.

OK thanks, I was under the impression that my motor would be more of a high end motor rather than low end torque, but either way I'm happy, it beats my old LG4.

the peak power numbers on the vortecs are impressive.. but what really belts ya is the midrange power they put out, getting you down the track. don't need big lift cams to make em fly.

I'm still waiting to make a run with mine. I just rebuilt the engine about 100 miles ago. I haven't found a long enough flat road to run it. I'm in no hurry. I don't want the engine to grenade yet.
