kind of depends on what it came from

all LS1s had aluminum Ds. They also had T56s that utilized a different clutch and actuation than LT1s.

LT1s had aluminum on the 1LE types and SS/firehawk.. otherwise, steel..

Actually my 88 GTA came stock with an aluminum driveshaft...I believe that most L98's came with them...but it varied.

I believe they started showing up in 87 too...you should find more info if you do a "search" on the whole board

I don't think that is entirely true. My buddy has a '98 LS1 and it did not come with an Al Driveshaft. Is it possible that it was part of the WS6 package because his was not originally a WS6? He has added the WS6 package to it though.(wheels, badges, hood)

I'm pretty sure all LS1s got the aluminum shaft.
But I could be wrong.

Either way, any aluminum shaft from any fbody 82-present will
fit your car. I've done the swap many times on many cars.
Takes about 15-20 min, a set of jack stands and a 12mm socket.
Oh and lots of soap LOL (for your hands)

1998+ LS1's have the aluminum driveshaft if they were:

1. equipped with the M6
2. equipped with the A4 with 3.23's

All 1998+ 2.73 geared A4's have the steel driveshaft

Yeah the 1le spare was a few lbs lighter than the "base" one.
