Remote HEI guys- Ever use an aftermarket spark module??

I just ran the 1/4 mile, and didn't get the times I had hoped for. While looking at the timeslips, it appears that mid-way thru the track I'm losing power. I've found something to aim my hate at! I'm wondering if that Borg-Warner ignition module I rebuilt the distributor with is at fault. I bet it's a fine module for "normal" drivers, not ones running the quarter at high RPM's.

I was thinking of replacing it with a GM one, then I noticed Holley came out with a few HEI modules. Accel has also made some. Has anyone put one on and noticed a difference? I'd need the one for the remote HEI distributor... it looks like this:
http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLin...A/891-103.html

If you've used one, have you noticed an improvement?

My application isn't specifically mentioned in the Accel or Holley application guides, however, I use the same AC/Delco spark module (part #D1943A) as a 1988 5.7l TPI, and all the injected 5.0/5.7 motors from '92. I'd also rather use Holley than Accel.

Oh, almost forgot, right now I have an Accel remote HEI Supercoil. I also have an MSD 6AL box that I plan on installing soon. The plug wires are new and test out fine, and the cap/rotor has hardly any carbon tracking on it. The timing is dead-on, and the plugs are 5 months old, in good shape, and gapped properly.

I wouldn't use the Accel part either. I had one- it lasted 50 miles! If you are going to use an MSD, you may not need to worry about changing it. I would, however, stick to AC Delco for this particular part if you do. Of the ones I have replaced, the Delco always seem to run much better. Holley may make a good one, but I still think it would be a waste of time with the MSD. Check with MSD, but I think the 6AL will basically take care of your coil charge.

I've had an accel module in my 87 for awhile with no problems...however I didn't notice any difference after I changed it.

Look elsewhere for your power loss. The module won't hurt your performance. Upgrading the coil is about all that will help short of getting a complete MSD setup. I have used the MSD module (and many others) with NO difference in performance, ever.

79 Malibu "beater" w/junkyard 400 SBC, tweaked QJet 4bbl, finally a decent set of heads, a few other tricks. A maddening 13.000001 @ 108 on the motor with little traction. No nitrous runs with the new heads yet.

Wow, thanks, guys! Heh, I was going to order the module today, too! I found my old receipt for the Borg-Warner module... $60- the cost of the Holley module. Grr...

So if I get this straight, by putting the MSD box on, I would be taking care of the "stock" module.. that's what this box is supposed to do. Sounds good to me! I was worried that the MSD box would give me a band-aid type of fix. Of course MSD doesn't make a remote HEI module, so I guess that's another clue to the puzzle. Thanks again!

With the MSD it bypasses the Module.

No, the MSD still uses the module on my application. If I had a 4-pin HEI with the magnetic pickup, I could install their harness to bypass the module on purpose... however I have the remote HEI module, which has 8 pins coming out of it (4 to computer, two to spark coil, two to pickup coil).

I definately checked that possibility out.. too bad. :/
