HELP! Car Backfiring at 40-45mph

I am having problems with my car backfiring at 40-45 in 3rd gear. It is running fine up until then but when it backfires (LOUD explosion w/ black smoke) i lose all acceleration/power and just coast. Idle is fine. About to check/replace spark plugs. Any tips greatly appreciated. '87 305 TPI w/ 700r4
