Cam Swap...Engine in car??
Cam Swap...Engine in car??
Can I swap my cam with my engine in the car? It looks like it may be possible, but I think I may have to take off the engine mounts and jack up the engine. Maybe I dont have to.

Yea its possible. I hear that all you have to do is remove the radiator and bend the 2 front clip cross members out of the way.

Yeah you can do an in car cam swap pretty easily, no lifting of the engine needed, etc. You simply remove the radiator, loosen and pull the A/C condenser out of the way, and remove or pry back the x brace under the nose while the cam is going out and during reassembly. You don't even actually unhook the A/C condenser or bleed the system, just loosen it and someone can hold it out of the way while removing/installing the cam.
Toughest part of the whole install is getting the timing chain cover back on, lol. On my 86 IROC I just ended up cutting the oil pan gasket and installing a newer timing chain cover w/ the seperate front seal gasket peice and using some RTV gasket junk to make sure everything was sealed 100%. Still isn't easy to get it back on but it looked impossilbe trying to reassemble it with the one piece pan gasket without dropping the pan a bit.

Ray is correct. The difficult part is getting the oil pan ledge-to-timing cover gasket to seal. There is a gasket available that allows you to cut/scrape away the original pan gasket, install the new segment, and dab the seams with RTV.

And to third that motion the timing cover does really suck to get back on, but yes you can do it inside the car. Prepare for alot of lower back pain though. lol
