305 heads on 350 block?

i was told that stock 305 (open) heads could work great on a 350 engine with flat top pistons (all pre-85 parts)
opinions? tips? the parts i've got them already. thanks guys.

i'm no expert but not many if any 305 heads flow very good and they have a smaller chamber size due to the 305's smaller bore. i think i'd look for a set of heads off a 350.

I hate to say it, but I think you're gonna bottlekneck if you do this. I looked at the same option a while ago cuz I too had the parts, but just decided against it because the flow would not be sufficent for a 350. You would have to have those 305 heads machined to open up the intake and exhaust runners and also probably run a dished piston to compensate for the high compression. A flat top would probably give you compression high enough to send you to the airport everytime you need gas. Why not get a set of 350 heads and do it right from the start.. Like I have always heard.."Let it breathe"

FSG,

Check the archives from about a week ago on the same topic. You'll be creating more problems than the potential extra static compression is worth. Here's one of them: https://www.thirdgen.org/messageforu...ML/001170.html

If that was possible, you would see more people winning races that way, wouldn't you think? Go to the race track and see how many fast cars have that combination. 305 heads have tiny valves and miniscule ports. They choke a 305. They are the limit to a 305's performance.

The biggest mistake you can make when building a motor is to think that you're saving money by using inferior cores, especially the heads which are the key to the engine's power. What you are actually doing is wasting all the money you're spending on everything else; because nothing else you do will ever overcome bad heads.

RB,

Not to divert the attention from the topic at hand, but is there really such a thing as a "bad head"? Some are just better than others...

Well I don't know, maybe you're right... the worst head I ever had was still better than no head at all...

I'm sorta using 305 heads on my 350..
they are 58cc chambers but everything has been ported and polished. bigger valves have been fitted 2.02 intake, 1.6 exhaust... and a 3 angle valve job.

Look at my exhaust ports

I have heard this will be alright for a completely stock 350. It will raise the compression but as soon as you go to doing anything at all even just an exhaust they won't flow enough to do any good. They will end up restricting flow, especially if you do anything major to it.
